Having worked in health services for 20 years, I wanted a complete career change. I wanted a job where I could be outside instead of in an office and something that wasn’t 9 -5. A leaflet came through the post advertising to become a driving instructor and after an initial interview i realised this was just what i was looking for.
Once i had decided i wanted to be a driving instructor i trained with BSM at their Enfield training centre but was based in Romford and have now been an ADI since 2006.
A lot of people ask me what is good about the job, i say its a job where you learn something new almost everyday. Not everyone learns in the same way and i love the variety this brings to my day, of course the best part is seeing a learner who has never driven before develop through to passing their test, the sense of achievement can’t be measured.
People have asked me what is the funniest thing that has happened as an instructor and there its lots of things that make me laugh while working. Almost everyday there is something which makes me smile doing this job, either from something a learner has said or done, another driver on the road or the funny things pedestrians do as i watch the world go by from the car. But simple as it sounds i still find the funnest thing is the look on a learners face as they move the car off for the very first time, the excitement, the shock and horror that they are driving!
